Chapter 57: Chapter 57

The boardroom of Hayes Enterprises, a once-calculated bastion of authority, now thrummed with tempestuous energy. Caspian was away, tending to his unforeseen health emergency, and there was a power vacuum waiting to be filled-and Sterling Price wasted no time filling it. The walls of glass loomed across the city's bustling main street, but inside, the air was thick with tension and unvoiced fears.

Sterling, a hunter. was standing at the end of the table. He was decked out in a crisp, charcoal-grey suit that fit his barn-storming physique, and he projected assurance. His head of silver hair popped up precisely, and his blue eyes scanned the room like a hawk. He started his speech reassuringly, his voice smooth and persuasive.

"Ladies and gentlemen, we stand at a crossroads of Hayes Enterprises in Caspian's absence," Sterling announčed, his hands flaring wide. "We now have the opportunity to stabilize and grow our flagship project to all-time highs." My experience and strategic vision are what we need to lead us in these turbulent times."

Board members leaned in, taken with his charisma. Sterling went on,laying out ambitious plans to expand development of the project, pledging higher profits and market dominance. His pledges to restore order appealed to the ambivalent members of their ranks, but the vacuum left behind by Caspian's unflinching leadership made them vulnerable to manipulation.

The room was starting to change as Sterling spoke. Skepticism turned to cautious optimism, and nodding heads rippled among the directors. The adept way he handled questions and preemptively answered the inevitable doubts was an impressive display. He knew how to work a room, and

turned uncertainty to unwavering support.

As Sterling finished his presentation, the mood in the room hung somewhere between optimism and dread. One senior board member, reputed for being impartial, stood abruptly, attracting every eye. He raised a folder, his face grim. "There is something you all need to see," he said, his voice piercing through the traces of Sterling's persuasion.

He set the folder down on the table, the contents inside jarring everyone's attention. When the board members leaned in over the documents, the room gasped. The leaked files outlined how Sterling intended to quietly kill Caspian's corporate vision entirely, describing plans to overwrite existing projects and channel resources toward his initiatives.

Sterling's collected exterior flickered for a moment, his gaze narrowing as the weight of the situation registered. Then all hell broke loose-the air was filled with voices yelling, accusations shooting back and forth as board members questioned the legitimacy and implications behind the leaked documents. Papers shuffled, and the collective facade cracked under the burden of treachery.

Through the uproar, Sterling sat eerily calm, a wicked smile on his lips. "It is, after all, just a misunderstanding," he retorted, his tone rich with false naiveté. "I promise you, my motives have always been to guarantee a bright future for Hayes Enterprises.

But the damage was done. The corporate boardroom, once a sanctuary of collaboration and networking, became a theatrical stage of betrayal and suspense. As the directors confronted the revelations, Sterling's smirk stuck around, suggesting a final, unspoken card he'd still kept up his sleeve. Even now, the fate of Hayes Enterprises dangling on the high wire of Sterling's machinations.

The Montague estate's dimly lit lounge must have seemed like a sanctuary.given the chaos enveloping Hayes Enterprises. Caspian slouched heavily onto a cushy leather couch, a storm of anger and fatigue on his face. The events of the past weeks all conspired to weigh down on him, andI his normally brilliant gaze had become dull and tired. Talia, across from him, stood rigid, guilt written in every line of her face.

Caspian's fists balled at his sides, nails biting into his palms as he fought to temper his rage. "How could you. Talia?" he demanded, his voice thick with emotion. "You, from the beginning, have betrayed us. Your father's manipulations weren't merely behind the scenes- you were a part of it."

Talia's shoulders drooped, tears brimming in her emerald-coloured eyes. Her voice quaking, she stepped forward tentatively and began to speak."I never meant to hurt you, Caspian. My father manipulated me and pressured me into choices I didn't want to make. I was trying to protect you, even at the expense of my own integrity."

Caspian's eyes widened with disbelief and hurt. "Protect me? By latching onto Sterling and leaking him information? You put all of our family and the company in jeopardy."

She extended a hand, a gesture of desperation, but he flinched, shaking his head. "I witnessed what Sterling was capable of, how he would tear everything apart to take power. I figured if I could gain his trust. I could maybe stop him from inside. But I lost control. I let fear control what I did."

A silence settled between them, thick with unsaid grief and treachery.Caspian was drained and leaned over, seemingly the weight of the world on him. Tears had tripled in his eyes now, and he struggled to remain resolute as anger morphed into profound sorrow. "You should have

trusted me. Talia," he whispered, the words slicing deeper than any accusation could. "We could have gone up against him together."

Talia moved closer, her voice just above a whisper. "I was scared, but I wanted to. I thought I was doing the right thing by keeping my distance, but now I realize that was the wrong thing to do. I'm so sorry, Caspian."

His breath caught, anger and empathy wrestling in him. "Sterling is making sure that Celeste's home is foreclosed, and that's his coup de grâce,"she said, her voice trembling. "He's using it to drive us completely asunder."

Caspian let out a surge of rage, hs eyes growing darker with new grit. "Sterling's not going to get away with this," he vowed, voice determined despite the fatigue dragging him down. "We need to stop him at alI costs."

"Yes," Talia said, tears rolling down her cheeks. "I'll do everything I can to make this right," she said, her loyalty clear despite the betrayal.

But before they could get any further into the plan, Caspian's phone buzzed ominously on the coffee table. He looked at the screen, his features constricting as he read the message: "You're running out of time. The next move is mine."-S.P. The room felt like it was closing in around them.the air charged with an imminent threat and the knowledge that Sterling's war was far from over.

The sun in the morning mist was as harsh as a banderhoomer on Celeste's childhood home, its garden overgrown and neglected. The woman stood in the doorway clutching a foreclosure notice, her hands shaking as she read the inevitable date for an auction in just days. A panic rose in Quezada's chest, the gravity of each impending loss constricting her.

A jog of her heart as she walked up and down the living room, where

laughter used to echo deep into the night and all around her but was now blotted out by the fact that something hung over her family like an open wound. The walls, lined with photographs from happier fimes, felt like they were collapsing toward her, the bitter knowledge that she was losing her home so different from the corporate squabbles playing at Hayes Enterprises.

Celeste snatched her phone, fingers slipping as she triedI to find the right words to reply to Caspian. Her message was short, frantic: "We need to stop this. Meet me at midnight." Making sure no one was watching, she glanced around the room and slipped out the back door, running along the overgrown path directly toward where she was supposed to meet the mysterious informant.

As day turned to night, she began to feel more pressure. The foreclosure notice pained her financially, the reminder of Sterling's unending battering. She couldn't bring herself to make the decision to abandon what had been the backdrop of so many of her memories, but she wasn't going to let fear stop her inher tracks. Resolve to defend her family and hit back against Sterling's final act, she hardened her heart for the fight still to come.

Night fell on the city, the streets still save for the distant murmur of motor traffic.Celeste sat at the agreed upon meeting spot, a lonely bench in the city park under the streetlights. Her heart raced, eyes wide as she looked around, scanning the area, focusing on every moving shadow.

A man emerged out of the shadows, his face shrouded under the brim of a hat. "You got the message," he said, low, urgent.

Celeste nodded and stepped closer. "I need to stop the auction.′′It2s Sterling behind this, and I can't have him ruining mny house of cards."

He passed her a folded sheet of paper, the creases worn from his grip."This is evidence of Sterling's illegal acts, including the fraudulent contracts he entered into to commence the foreclosure. Use it wisely."

Just as she was about to answer, a loud rustle from a bush startled them both.Celeste's heart raced as she spun around to watch a figure come into view, his face hidden in darkness. The informant's gaze locked with hers, a flash of warning passing between them. Embracing the moment of fear that lingered in the flurry of his motion, he accused her, "You can't trust everyone," before disappearing back into the blackness, leaving Celeste alone with both the material that could literally destroy her life and the awful, disgusting thought that Sterling's stretch into the world was even more treacherous than she could have imagined.

After sliding the document safely into her bag, her phone buzzed with a new message: "Meet me at midnight. There's a way to halt the auction."The last push Sterling wanted had already begun, and Celeste understood that the hours would determine not only the fate of her home but of Hayes Enterprises itself.
