Chapter 124

Instead of going straight home, Linsey stopped by the Grester Public Library. Her knowledge of therapeutic massage was limited, and she was determined to be more than just a bystander in Collin's recovery.

She spent the entire day absorbed in medical texts, learning the intricacies of nerve stimulation and muscle recovery. If Collin could walk again, he wouldn't have to endure the subtle disdain of the Riley family. She meant every word of her promise to stay by him, but she also wanted to fight for his future.

When she finally returned to Vista Villa with several books in hand, Josh greeted her at the door. "Mrs. Riley, you have a guest. A young lady is waiting in the living room."

Linsey hurried inside, finding her best friend, Dolores, sitting on the sofa. "Dolores!" Linsey exclaimed with a wide smile. "Why didn't you tell me you were coming?"

To Linsey's surprise, Dolores didn't smile back. Her face was etched with a mixture of fury and deep-seated worry. "Do you really not know why I'm here? Linsey, tell me the truth!"

Linsey recoiled slightly, trying to deflect. "Dolores, let's get you something to eat first. The kitchen staff here is fantastic—"

"Stop it, Linsey!" Dolores snapped, standing up and gently but firmly taking Linsey’s arm. She pulled back the sleeve, revealing the marks left behind from the kidnapping ordeal—the fading bruises and the lingering signs of the struggle she had endured.

In that instant, Dolores's anger evaporated, replaced by a wave of pure heartache. "Oh, Linsey... how much did this hurt?"

Hearing the tremor in her friend's voice, Linsey felt a lump form in her throat. Dolores had always been her sanctuary. "It’s much better now, I promise," Linsey replied softly.

"I saw the news about Felix's arrest," Dolores said, her eyes filling with tears. "The report mentioned a kidnapping, and I just knew. That man is a monster. I should have done more to protect you."

Linsey gently reassured her. "It’s over now. Felix is facing justice, and I am safe here. I didn't tell you because I didn't want to burden you while you're so busy with work."

"No work is more important than you," Dolores insisted. "Promise me you won't keep things like this from me again."

"I promise," Linsey whispered.

As they spoke, the sound of a car engine cutting off outside caught their attention. Collin had returned.
