Jenna stared blankly at her phone screen, her fingertips repeatedly swiping through the call log.
She worried Ethan might be in a meeting and didn't dare disturb him again. Turning away, she headed into the bathroom.
The warm water cascaded over her body, but the number "one million" kept flashing through her mind.
An amount she could hardly save after months working at the club, now effortlessly obtained with just one word from Ethan.
This sudden fortune filled her with both joy and unease.
After hastily drying her hair, Jenna skipped her skincare routine and grabbed her wallet to rush to the grocery market.
She wanted to prepare all of Ethan's favorite dishes before he came home.
Steam rose from the rice cooker in the kitchen as Jenna bent over sorting vegetables. Suddenly, her phone vibrated in her pocket.
The name "Ethan Roscente" on the screen made her breath hitch.
"Mr. Roscente, I didn't mean to call so many times..." she blurted out nervously, "I just wanted to thank you for the donation and ask what you'd like for lunch."
Ethan had just finished reprimanding his team in the conference room.
The project team's mistakes had darkened his mood, and the incessant phone notifications only aggravated his irritation.
Yet when Jenna's cautious voice came through, the knot in his chest unexpectedly loosened.
Like someone gently smoothing his furrowed brow.
Lighting a cigarette, his voice remained cool through the smoke: "No need to cater to my preferences."
Ever since he started coming home for meals, this woman had been subtly probing his tastes.
Even his mother hadn't been this attentive.
"But you're the pillar of this household," Jenna's voice softened. "You work so hard, I should at least..."
Ethan stubbed out his cigarette.
He recognized her fawning tone and remembered the guilt he owed her.
"As you wish," he finally conceded.
After hanging up, Ethan returned to his documents.
At 11:30, he grabbed his suit jacket to leave.
"Mr. Roscente!" Lucas hurried after him. "Your lunch meeting with Mr. Bo..."
Ethan paused mid-step.
He'd completely forgotten.
"Reschedule it for this afternoon."
Lucas broke into a sweat. "But Mr. Bo has already confirmed the timing. Changing it now might..."
One sharp glance from Ethan silenced him immediately.
Watching his CEO stride away, Lucas wiped his damp forehead.
