Jenna Roland's expression remained indifferent. "I'm not coming back."
The answer sent shockwaves through the room.
They had assumed her sudden goodwill meant she wanted to bring her burden of a brother home.
No one expected such a blunt refusal.
Victor Roland frowned deeply. "Then what's all this for?"
Jenna knew she needed a plausible excuse.
"I need to borrow money."
Before she could finish, mocking laughter erupted around her.
She was long accustomed to such cruel remarks.
Victor's voice turned grave. "We're expanding the orchard. No funds to spare."
"Not even thirty thousand?"
"No."
Jenna's gaze dropped to the keyring at his waist.
Among those many keys, one must unlock that mysterious wooden box.
She lifted her chin. "Then I'll do housework. A hundred a day."
Fiona Roland sneered. "Club earnings not enough?"
"Milo needs surgery."
Jenna met Victor's eyes squarely. "Call it charity."
The orchard had once belonged to Jenna's parents. After a tense pause, Victor gave a stiff nod.
"Fine."
Jenna turned to leave.
"Report to the orchard tomorrow for weeding," Victor added abruptly.
Her steps faltered slightly. The calculation was transparent.
The moment the door closed, Fiona exploded. "A hundred a day for housework? Have you lost your mind?"
Victor shot her a cold look. "If you didn't gamble daily, I wouldn't have agreed."
Jason Roland smirked. "Mom, we can just refuse payment at month's end."
Heidi Roland clapped excitedly. "Brilliant, darling!"
"Free labor—what a bargain." Jason preened.
Victor silently resumed eating, tacitly approving the scheme.
Fiona beamed. "Finally showing some sense!"
