Jenna's scathing words about Lucien Valois exploded like firecrackers in Ethan's chest, sending sparks of joy through him.
He pressed his lips tightly together, fighting to conceal his amusement.
"So you're not interested in him?" Ethan deliberately probed with feigned indifference.
Jenna rolled her eyes in exasperation. "Mr. Roscente, we're legally married. Is that really appropriate to ask?"
She planted her hands on her hips, bristling like an angry kitten.
A glint of satisfaction flashed in Ethan's eyes. "Good to know you understand boundaries."
"Of course I do!" Jenna declared firmly. "I won't develop feelings for anyone else before our divorce, rest assured!"
Ethan's heart soared, though his expression remained impassive. "He doesn't seem like the type to give up easily."
"I don't care what he does!" Jenna waved dismissively. "Yesterday was pure bad luck—like walking under a ladder and breaking a mirror combined!"
Ethan finally released the breath he'd been holding.
Milo suddenly interjected, "Mr. Roscente, will Dr. Melford really come today?"
"Yes." Ethan turned to the boy. "He'll finalize the surgical plan after tonight's consultation."
"With Dr. Melford operating, everything will go smoothly." Milo's eyes sparkled with hope.
Ethan met Jenna's gaze. "You can come to me directly if anything arises."
"You've already helped tremendously." Jenna shook her head. "I couldn't possibly trouble you further."
Without Ethan's intervention, Liam Melford would never have taken Milo's case—let alone reduced the fees.
Ethan checked his watch. "I should get going."
Jenna escorted him to the elevator, only returning to the hospital room after the doors closed.
At five that afternoon, Jenna carried a food container back to the room.
Just as she finished clearing the meal, the door swung open.
A man in a crisp white shirt entered, gold-rimmed glasses perched on his aristocratic nose, exuding an air of quiet authority.
Dr. Macmillan followed behind. "This is Dr. Liam Melford, your surgeon tomorrow."
Milo sat up eagerly. "Hello, Dr. Melford."
Liam's phoenix eyes narrowed slightly. "Nervous about tomorrow's procedure?"
"Not when I know you're the one operating." Milo gave a shy smile.
Liam turned to Jenna. "And you are?"
"I'm his sister, Jenna Roland." She quickly introduced herself.
Liam studied her with sudden interest.
So this was the woman who'd made Ethan Roscente break his own rules?
