Ethan's fingers lightly covered Jenna's hand as he noticed her hesitation.
His gaze burned with intensity. His voice was deep and firm. "Give me a chance. If I ever disappoint you, you can leave anytime."
Jenna's lashes fluttered. Memories of the past few months flashed through her mind.
He had brought her warm midnight snacks during overtime work. He had stayed by her side when she caught a cold. He remembered every little habit of hers.
Compared to starting over with a stranger, this man who knew her so well seemed far more trustworthy.
"Okay," she finally nodded, then raised a warning finger. "But if you dare lie to me—"
Ethan's eyes lit up with joy before she could finish. He leaned in eagerly. "You're saying yes?"
"We already signed the marriage certificate. Why ask now?" Jenna turned her face away, the tips of her ears turning pink.
"Of course it matters." Ethan suddenly lowered his voice, his warm breath brushing her ear. "This way, I can rightfully—"
The room plunged into darkness before he could finish.
Before Jenna could react, she felt herself being lifted into the air.
"Ethan!" She gasped, pounding his shoulders. "Put me down!"
Effortlessly, he placed her on the bed, caging her beneath his arms. Amusement laced his voice. "It's not our first time sharing a bed. Why so nervous?"
"You've been drinking!" Jenna pushed against him. "I'm sleeping on the couch!"
Ethan suddenly released her and walked toward the closet.
Just as Jenna thought she'd escaped, he scooped her up again.
"If you don't want the bed," he strode toward the prepared floor bedding, "then we'll sleep here together."
Jenna glared at him, indignant. "I meant I don't want to sleep with you!"
Ethan had already settled down, pulling her firmly into his embrace.
"Don't move," he murmured, resting his chin atop her head. "I promise I'll just sleep."
Jenna tensed to struggle, but then heard his muffled voice. "I'm really exhausted today."
Her heart softened inexplicably, and she stilled.
"No crossing the line," she warned gruffly, yet subtly nestled closer.
In the darkness, Ethan's lips curled in triumph.
He had planned an elaborate confession, but the unexpected had forced his hand. Though rushed, holding her like this was more than enough.
