Chapter 385: Chapter 385

At ten in the morning, Jenna Roland waved off her last customer and rubbed her sore shoulders.

She pulled out her phone and dialed Officer Liam Hill.

"Officer Hill, how's the Lydia Lombardi situation?"

His steady voice came through. "Seven-day detention and a five-hundred-dollar fine."

Jenna burst out laughing.

This outcome was even more satisfying than she'd expected.

"Did she throw a fit?"

"Doesn't matter how mad she is. The penalty stands." He paused. "By the way, how's your friend Sylvia?"

Jenna's expression darkened. "Pretty badly hurt. Any leads on those two attackers?"

"Security cameras only caught their backs. Masks and hats. No solid clues yet."

"Sounds like professionals."

"Not necessarily." His tone was firm. "We'll keep investigating."

Jenna changed the subject. "Free for lunch? My treat."

"On duty today. Rain check."

As she hung up and slipped her phone back into her pocket, the door chime jingled.

Milo Roland barged in, full of energy.

"Sis! Business looks good!"

Jenna eyed him up and down. "Ryan's out of the hospital?"

"He can walk on his own now." Milo's smile faltered. "But..."

"What's wrong?"

"His parents divorced. Neither wants him. They're making him drop out and get a job."

The cloth in Jenna's hand fell to the floor.

"He's only a sophomore!"

"So I was thinking..." Milo rubbed his hands together. "Sis, maybe we could help him?"

Jenna narrowed her eyes. "That's why you're here?"

Milo crouched in front of her with an ingratiating grin. "He's got such good grades. It'd be a waste if he quit school."

"A year's tuition plus living expenses would run at least five or six grand." Jenna sighed. "With your expenses too, that's a lot of pressure."

"Think of it as an investment!" His eyes sparkled. "Once he gets into college, he'll pay you back for sure!"

Jenna met her brother's hopeful gaze and felt her resolve soften.
