Ethan had confessed to Jenna that Yvonne Sherwood was his first love from his youth, now nothing more than a distant memory.
When Jenna mentioned Yvonne's name, Grandma Blanche paused mid-motion, the hoe in her hand hovering slightly.
"Where did you hear that?"
"Ethan mentioned her once when he had too much to drink at a business dinner." Jenna plucked at the weeds by her feet. "He explained everything afterward."
Grandma Blanche straightened up, dusting the soil from her hands. "If that girl dares to come back and cause trouble, don't hold back. If she makes a scene, I'll stand by you!"
Jenna's fingers dug unconsciously into her palms. "But... what if Ethan still has feelings for her?"
"Impossible!" Grandma Blanche said firmly. "That boy married you, and he'll take responsibility for you till the end."
The elderly woman suddenly swung the hoe in a mock chopping motion. "If he dares wrong you, I'll break his legs myself!"
Jenna laughed, though her eyes grew slightly red. "You can't force matters of the heart."
"Silly child," Grandma Blanche said affectionately, patting her head. "Ethan is loyal. Once he sets his mind on someone, it's for life."
By noon, Ethan returned with his parents from touring the orchard.
Jenna checked the time and stood. "Mom, Dad, I'll go buy some groceries. You should head back and rest."
"Let Ethan go with you," Grandma Blanche insisted.
Ethan took over smoothly. "Give the house keys to Mom and Dad."
On their way down the hill, Jenna realized the car keys were on the same ring.
At the market, Ethan silently took all the shopping bags from her, the heavy groceries seeming weightless in his hands.
In the car on the way back, Ethan spoke suddenly. "What my parents said... it's what I wanted to say too."
Jenna rubbed her arms exaggeratedly. "So corny. I'm getting goosebumps."
Ethan glanced at her fair skin, where tiny bumps had indeed appeared, and chuckled. "You dislike hearing the truth?"
"It's because it's too sincere that it's overwhelming." Jenna tilted her head to look at him, her eyes shimmering. "As long as you don't change your heart, I'll never leave you in this lifetime."
Ethan tightened his grip on the steering wheel, his voice deep and steady. "Ethan Roscente will only ever have one wife—Jenna Roland."
Sunlight streamed through the window, warming their intertwined hands with its golden glow.
