Chapter 52: Chapter 52

Jenna declined Ethan's offer.

"Mr. Roscente, I have enough clothes. Please don't waste your money."

Ethan's gaze swept over the sparse contents of her closet. The faded fabrics looked worse than rags in his eyes.

On the shoe rack, a pair of worn cloth shoes had frayed edges. The only pair of leather shoes had peeling patches of lacquer.

He couldn't comprehend how anyone could live so frugally in this day and age.

"Though this is a marriage of convenience, I won't neglect my obligations."

Jenna lowered her lashes, fingers unconsciously twisting the hem of her shirt.

"Mr. Roscente, I truly want nothing from this marriage. I didn't deceive Grandma Blanche."

A flicker of mockery passed through Ethan's eyes. If she hadn't schemed somehow, why would the old woman force him to marry a complete stranger?

"Hmph."

That cold scoff made Jenna's heart clench. She suddenly realized explanations would only deepen the misunderstanding.

Silently, she gathered the dishes and retreated to the kitchen.

When she emerged, the living room stood empty.

After a two-hour nap, Jenna left with a shopping bag.

She chose the cheaper farmers' market. Every penny saved meant another reference book for Milo.

Her phone rang abruptly.

"Grandma?"

"Dear, your grandfather and I are coming for lunch tomorrow."

Jenna's lips curved unconsciously. "Of course. What does Grandpa like?"

"The old man loves cola chicken wings and braised pork knuckles. Just make sure they're tender—his teeth aren't what they used to be."

Hanging up, Jenna felt surprised. She hadn't expected Grandpa Harrison's tastes to match Milo's so closely.

At the fresh produce stall, she meticulously selected the plumpest chicken wings.

After a hurried dinner, Jenna rushed to Studio 54.

The moment she entered, her phone rang again.

Caller ID: Lily Evans.

"Hello, Lily?"
