Production is imminent.
Genevieve’s expression showed no shame. Her voice grew even more biting.
“What’s wrong? Was I mistaken? You’ve been absent for so long, it’s been a total loss. With Mrs. Sterling’s deadline approaching, I’m certain you’ll be pleading for more time.” Genevieve’s tone dripped with mockery. “But allow me to remind you, Mrs. Sterling does not grant extensions.”
Her words were severe, yet they held a grain of truth.
Evelyn knew that an extension from Beatrice was impossible.
Their colleagues watched, their glances a mix of genuine and feigned concern for Evelyn. “Genevieve has a point, Evelyn. Time is not your ally.”
“Did Nathanial truly approve such a long leave? Did he neglect to mention this project?”
“Evelyn, perhaps you should seek Nathanial’s assistance. He has spoken with Mrs. Sterling previously; he might be able to intercede on your behalf.”
“With only a few days remaining, you must finalize the design and initiate production. It’s a formidable task for anyone.”
Responding to the varied concerns, Evelyn offered a composed smile. “Please, do not worry about me. The design is complete, and I have already been in contact with Mrs. Sterling. Production is set to begin very soon.”
Her colleagues were visibly astonished.
“Is that true? Evelyn, that’s extraordinary!”
“Working while hospitalized? That’s true dedication.”
“No wonder you aced the interview. Truly impressive.”
Genevieve, however, scowled at Evelyn’s assuredness. She let out a derisive snort, further straining the office atmosphere.
“Evelyn, don’t be overconfident. Finishing the design is one thing; executing production is another. You’re still a novice with no hands-on experience. Design and production management are entirely different beasts. We shall see where you stand when this project fails,” Genevieve sneered.
An uncomfortable silence fell over the room. Colleagues exchanged uneasy looks, no one daring to speak.
Yet Evelyn remained perfectly calm. She met Genevieve’s gaze directly, her voice steady. “Thank you for the reminder. You are correct—handling a project of this magnitude alone is daunting. Therefore, I plan to consult Nathanial and involve several skilled colleagues.”
Turning to her coworkers, Evelyn asked politely, “Would any of you be interested in joining this project? I assure you, your contributions will be formally recognized in your performance reviews.”
Her offer immediately brightened the faces around her.
“Really?”
“Evelyn, are you serious? I would be delighted to work with you!”
“This is wonderful! Thank you for this opportunity!”
“Count me in, Evelyn. We will give it our absolute best.”
No one in the office was willing to let such a chance pass. This project for Beatrice Sterling, a client known for her generosity, promised significant rewards.
Not only would successful completion bring substantial benefits to the company, but it was also likely to secure a generous bonus for each team member.
Moreover, Evelyn had already completed the design; only the production phase remained.
With the preparatory work finished and a capable team assembled, even the tight deadline seemed less intimidating.
A wave of excitement spread through the group. It was an unexpected opportunity, akin to a stroke of incredible luck.
