Chapter 194: Chapter 194

Just You Wait, Evelyn

What did Evelyn have that so completely enthralled Alexander?

How could she have stolen his affection in such a brief period?

Cassandra's hands balled into fists, her nails carving half-moons into her skin.

If that was how things stood, she would shatter Alexander's idealized image of Evelyn.

She would ensure Evelyn was permanently removed from his life.

"Just you wait, Evelyn," she whispered, the words a venomous promise.

A sharp breath caught in her throat, fury simmering just beneath the surface.

Her eyes narrowed into resentful slits.

Back at Serenity Oaks, Alexander realized Evelyn was not in their bedroom.

He asked a servant about her location.

He was informed that Evelyn had gone to the study after dinner and had not emerged.

He remembered her unusual silence during the meal.

A thread of concern pulled him toward the study.

He opened the door to find her asleep, her head pillowed on her arms atop the desk.

A soft smile touched his lips as he watched her.

He maneuvered his wheelchair closer.

He reached out to wake her, to suggest moving to the bedroom.

His movement disturbed some papers.

His gaze fell on the design sketches scattered near her.

Surprise flickered within him.

He knew she worked in design, but this was his first real look at her work.

His eyes scanned several drawings.

No wonder Beatrice had spoken so highly of her.

The sketches were remarkable.

Evelyn possessed a genuine, raw talent.

He was so absorbed he didn't notice her stir.

Sensing a presence, her eyes flew open.

"Who's there?" she asked, her voice husky with sleep.

Seeing her alarm, Alexander spoke gently. "It's just me, Evelyn. You're safe."

The tension left her body the moment she recognized him.

A relieved sigh escaped her lips. "Alexander. I thought..."

His expression softened, a memory of her recent ordeal flashing in his mind. "There's nothing to fear here, Evelyn. We are home. The security at Serenity Oaks is impeccable."

Evelyn blinked, taken aback by his insight. "I know," she replied softly, giving a small nod.

The usual sharpness in his eyes was replaced by a rare tenderness.

He reached out and gently smoothed her disheveled hair. "Why did you fall asleep here?" he asked, his voice low. "You'll catch a chill. If you're tired, you should rest in the bedroom."

Evelyn's mind cleared.

She had been completely consumed by her work, losing all track of time.

"Right," she said, hurriedly gathering the drafts. "I'll go to bed now."

Alexander chuckled softly, amused by her flustered state. "Why the hurry? Do you think I plan to accost you?" he teased.

"No!" The word burst from her, and she felt heat rush to her cheeks.

She risked a glance at him and saw the playful smirk gracing his lips, which only deepened her blush.

"I just... I thought you might be displeased I became so distracted," she explained, trying to compose herself.

He raised an eyebrow. "Not at all," he assured her. "I understand passion for one's work."

His gaze returned to the designs. "Besides," he added, his tone sincere, "your work is exceptional. It surpasses that of many established designers I've encountered."

Evelyn flushed at the direct compliment. "Oh, stop," she said, flustered. "You're exaggerating. I have much to learn."
