Chapter 204: Chapter 204

Make Sure To Look After Alexander For Me

Evelyn, already tense, flinched.

A wave of heat flooded her face, making her cheeks burn.

Her eyes darted nervously around the car's interior.

Frustration coiled tightly in her chest.

She squeezed her eyes shut and bit the back of her hand.

She was locked in a fierce battle with her own desires.

What had she been thinking moments ago?

Had she truly been that desperate to kiss Alexander?

Where was her self-restraint?

Alexander's expression was unreadable, but a faint crease in his brow betrayed his displeasure.

He opened his mouth, ready to say he could ignore the ringing phone.

But Evelyn pointed a trembling finger towards his pocket. "You should get that. It might be urgent."

He glanced at her flushed face, his throat constricting again.

The burning need to kiss her still pulsed within him, but he forced it down.

Now, all that suppressed frustration found a new focus—the person interrupting them.

His jaw clenched as he pulled out the phone with a scowl.

The screen showed the caller: Cassandra.

His expression darkened instantly, the frustration in his chest solidifying into something cold and heavy.

He took a slow, deliberate breath before answering, his voice sharp with impatience. "What do you want?" He made no attempt to conceal his irritation.

A brief pause followed. Then, Cassandra's light, airy voice floated through the speaker. "Oh, nothing important, really."

Evelyn stiffened.

An unidentifiable emotion flickered across her features before she turned to stare out the window, her gaze fixed on the blur of passing lights.

Cassandra's soft, almost musical tone filled the phone, making the silence in the backseat feel thick and heavy.

"It's getting quite late. I noticed you and Evelyn hadn't returned. I grew a little concerned, so I decided to call. If you're having any trouble, please let me know. Perhaps I can assist."

She sounded thoughtful and caring, but she knew precisely what she was doing.

She was fully aware that Evelyn and Alexander were on a date tonight.

This call served a dual purpose: to disrupt their moment and to assess the current state of their relationship.

Alexander let out a sharp exhale and pinched the bridge of his nose. His reply was curt. "Everything is fine. We're on our way back now."

Cassandra hummed softly, feigning relief. After a calculated beat of silence, she added with a smile in her voice, "Evelyn is with you, isn't she?"

Alexander's eyes flicked towards Evelyn. "She is."

Cassandra's tone remained light, almost playful. "Evelyn, the night air has quite a chill. Make sure to look after Alexander for me, won't you?"

Then, as if suddenly realizing her overstep, she gave a soft, self-deprecating laugh. "Forgive me, Evelyn. You must think I'm being absurd. I just can't seem to stop worrying when he's out of sight. I suppose I'm just overly anxious."

"What exactly do you think is going to happen to me?" Alexander interjected, his voice flat and emotionless.

Evelyn remained silent, listening intently.

There was nothing explicitly wrong with Cassandra's words, yet something about them felt deeply unsettling.

As Alexander's wife, it was her place to care for him. She didn't need an outsider, especially Cassandra, reminding her of that duty.

Despite her unease, Evelyn kept her voice polite. "Of course, I will."

The moment Alexander ended the call, the earlier warmth evaporated completely.

The air in the car grew heavy and dense, the shift in Evelyn's mood palpable.

Alexander noticed the change, but deciphering women was never his forte.

He turned the conversation over in his mind, searching for the right thing to say, but came up empty.

Cassandra's carefully chosen words echoed in Evelyn's mind, draining away any desire to speak further.

A heavy silence stretched between them for the remainder of the journey.

After what felt like an eternity, the car finally pulled up to Serenity Oaks.

Evelyn stepped out, moving to assist Alexander, but someone else was faster.

Cassandra had hurried over, swiftly inserting herself between them.
