You Need To Develop Your Skills
Evelyn noticed Genevieve from the corner of her eye.
Genevieve answered with a smug, self-satisfied smirk.
With exaggerated politeness, she spoke up. "Evelyn, since we both started today, I didn't think to bring you a gift. I hope we can work together productively."
Nathanial suddenly remembered Evelyn was standing there. But with the well-connected Genevieve present, why would he pay any attention to Evelyn, a designer with no real backing?
He spoke dismissively. "Oh, right. This is Evelyn. Everyone, take some time to get acquainted. We'll have a team meeting in thirty minutes."
After this brief introduction, Nathanial happily walked back to his office, clutching the expensive gift box.
Evelyn moved towards her assigned desk.
Genevieve followed closely, taking the seat next to hers.
"You must be shocked to see me here," Genevieve murmured under her breath.
While Evelyn arranged her new workspace, she gave Genevieve a quick glance but remained silent.
Unfazed by the lack of response, Genevieve continued. "Winning yesterday means nothing. I still got a position here at Aethelgard Industries. Just you wait."
Her voice was thick with mockery as she stared directly at Evelyn, her eyes full of contempt.
Their new colleagues overheard this exchange. An uncomfortable quiet fell over the area. No one dared to comment openly.
A few, however, couldn't resist whispering.
"Evelyn got the top score in the interview. Genevieve is known for being a bully. This won't end well for Evelyn."
"Exactly. The new girl has already made an enemy of Genevieve. I feel sorry for her."
"Quiet! If she hears us, we're finished. Remember, we all accepted her gifts."
"So what? She's rich. Those gifts are nothing to her."
As expected, during the meeting half an hour later, Nathanial publicly assigned Genevieve a major task.
"With the upcoming season, we are refreshing the designs for a classic brand. Since the senior team is occupied, Genevieve will lead this project."
Genevieve responded with enthusiastic energy. "Thank you for this opportunity, Nathanial. I won't let you down."
Evelyn glanced at her before turning an expectant gaze toward Nathanial, waiting for her own assignment.
However, Nathanial's expression held no expectation for her. He addressed her with a tone of superiority. "Evelyn, your experience is limited. For now, focus on learning how the team operates. Observe the senior designers. You can help with basic tasks, like fetching coffee. Understood?"
Genevieve shot Evelyn another triumphant grin, her eyes dripping with disdain.
She knew it. Evelyn was no match for her.
Evelyn frowned, frustration bubbling inside her.
She had believed that once she was hired, she could finally begin her dream of being a real designer.
But the tasks Nathanial gave her were insultingly trivial.
Feeling indignant, Evelyn stood up. "Nathanial, why does Genevieve, who started the same day as me, get a major project while I'm assigned menial chores? This doesn't seem fair."
Nathanial was visibly irritated by her directness. "What's not fair about it, Evelyn? You are a rookie. You need to develop your skills. Do you think doing well in one interview makes you special?"
