Rebecca pretended to be surprised. "Oh, that's right, I nearly forgot. Amelia, you just got here, so you must have missed all the drama earlier."
Evelyn stood up immediately. Her gaze was cold as she stared directly at Rebecca. "Rebecca, what on earth do you want?"
Evelyn wondered why this woman insisted on causing a scene when she was finally having a decent evening.
Amelia, looking worried, also rose to her feet. "Did Anastasia come by? Why did she leave so quickly?"
She remembered how Anastasia constantly made trouble for Evelyn back in their university days.
Given Rebecca's suggestive tone, something major must have happened while she was away.
The tension in the air was palpable.
Rebecca started to speak, but Evelyn cut her off sharply. "Rebecca, we have nothing left to discuss. And I don't need any apologies."
The previous matter was already settled. Evelyn hadn't planned to involve Amelia, wanting to spare her friend any unnecessary worry.
But Amelia, who was hoping for an explanation, felt a sharp pang of disappointment.
It had been years since Amelia moved abroad after her marriage, losing touch with Evelyn.
Although Evelyn had been kind tonight, Amelia suspected she was still angry. Otherwise, why would she keep her in the dark?
Rebecca noticed the flicker of hurt on Amelia's face and felt a secret thrill of satisfaction.
Her approach was never about a genuine apology to Evelyn.
"Well, if that's how it is, I guess I was being too sensitive," Rebecca said with a sigh, turning away with an exaggerated show of dejection.
As she turned, Rebecca subtly stepped on the hem of Amelia's gown.
Amelia stumbled, her wine glass tilting dangerously.
While Amelia didn't make a sound, Rebecca gasped loudly, drawing everyone's attention.
Rebecca quickly steadied her own glass and shot Amelia a reproachful look. "Amelia, it's been years since graduation, and you're still so clumsy? You need to be more careful, especially standing next to Evelyn. Do you have any idea the dress Evelyn is wearing is by the legendary designer Julian Montclair? It's a limited edition piece worth millions!"
Amelia paled. "Millions?"
Her eyes widened as she stared at Evelyn's dress. It certainly looked exquisite.
Evelyn gave Rebecca a dismissive glance, seeing right through her act.
It was clear Rebecca wasn't finished with her games.
Choosing to stay calm, Evelyn decided to wait and see what Rebecca would try next. She prepared herself to handle whatever came.
This was the only way to ensure Rebecca wouldn't cause more trouble later.
Noticing Amelia's stunned expression, Rebecca feigned surprise. "You probably didn't know, but Evelyn has the perfect husband. He's so devoted he gifted her a dress from one of the world's top designers."
Rebecca paused, pretending to be confused. "What? You two are so close, and she never mentioned this to you?"
Evelyn scoffed internally. So this was Rebecca's strategy? Trying to create a rift between her and Amelia with petty lies.
Amelia, visibly flustered, quickly apologized to Evelyn. "Evelyn, I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to. I just lost my balance for a second."
There was only one man in Amelia's heart, and it was Mitchell. In the second year of...
