Isabella’s heart softened slightly.
A swirl of conflicting emotions clouded her gaze. “Well…”
“I’ll have the driver take Liam home,” Ethan offered, sensing her hesitation and making the decision for her.
She wavered a moment longer, then finally nodded.
Leaning down, she gently stroked Liam’s hair. “Sweetheart, we’ll drop you off first, alright? I’ll be home soon.”
Liam agreed obediently.
After ensuring Liam was safely inside his apartment, the car headed toward the suburbs.
No one spoke during the drive. The air grew heavy, almost suffocating.
Finally, the car stopped in front of Blackwood Estate.
Isabella hadn’t even stepped out yet, but a deep sense of foreboding washed over her.
The intricately carved wooden gate and sprawling courtyard were clear signs of the Blackwood family’s immense wealth.
They entered the manor to find Victoria chatting warmly with Sophia in the living room. Both women were all smiles, painting a perfect picture of a close mother-daughter bond.
The moment Victoria spotted Isabella, however, her expression turned to ice.
“Ethan, why did you bring that wretched woman here? Outsiders are not welcome at our family gathering!”
Beside her, Sophia was simmering with resentment.
She had called Ethan before coming to Blackwood Estate, but Benjamin had answered. He said Ethan was occupied and couldn’t come to the phone, so Sophia had driven over alone.
Despite her frustration, she expertly maintained the act.
Taking Victoria’s hand, she said soothingly, “Please don’t be upset. I’m sure Isabella is just concerned about Arthur’s health…”
But Victoria shoved her hand away and glared at Isabella. “Who cares what she thinks! Get her out of here, now!”
Isabella was no pushover. She opened her mouth to retort when a deep, commanding voice boomed. “I’d like to see who dares to throw my granddaughter-in-law out!”
With the butler’s support, Arthur slowly descended the stairs. Though his frame was bent, he radiated undeniable authority. Instantly, Victoria’s outburst died, leaving an awkward silence.
Quick as lightning, Sophia rushed forward to support Arthur. “Please be careful on the stairs,” she cooed.
But the old man wanted none of it. He shook off her arm as if her touch disgusted him. “You are not family. What are you doing here?”
Victoria’s face tightened. “Arthur,” she hurried to explain, “Sophia and Ethan—”
“Know your place,” Arthur barked, pointing first at Sophia, then at Victoria. “And enough of your schemes! Isabella is the only granddaughter-in-law I acknowledge. No one else will ever take her place!”
Isabella froze, her heart pounding violently in her chest.
