Elise made her way toward the filming location. Penelope hurried after her.
Her stunt double was already fitted into the wire harness. Ethan stood nearby, giving her directions.
The stunt double appeared to be around Elise's age. She had a quiet, obedient demeanor.
Elise had overheard numerous crew members praising the young woman.
With her attractive looks and willingness to endure hardship, she was poised for stardom once opportunity struck.
Elise watched as the stunt double was hoisted into the air. A wave of fear washed over her. Her body trembled just from witnessing the ascent.
Feeling a pang of guilt, she resolved to treat her double to an expensive dinner. She would also buy her a generous gift.
But as the thought formed, a sharp snap echoed overhead. The stunt double, suspended mid-air, began swaying violently. Then, the wire gave way completely.
Screams of shock erupted from the crew. Elise stood frozen, petrified. She watched in horror as the double plummeted from dozens of feet above. The woman landed directly on top of her.
There was no time to evade. The full force of the collision sent them both crashing to the ground. A heavy, dull thud echoed as they landed in a tangled heap.
The onlookers remained stunned, motionless for a long moment. Then, a figure burst from behind the cameras. He rushed to Elise, scooping her from the floor.
"Get an ambulance! Now!" he shouted, his voice raw with panic.
The spell was broken. Several men sprang into action. They hurried to carry Elise and the unconscious stunt double away.
Elise was quickly placed inside her private MPV. The stunt double was loaded into a smaller vehicle. Both sped toward the hospital's emergency room.
Ethan was covered in blood. It was impossible to tell if it was solely Elise's or a mixture from both women.
He sat in the hospital corridor, his entire body shaking violently.
Suddenly, rapid, urgent footsteps approached. Nancy Levine and Ivan York rushed into the corridor, their faces etched with deep worry.
They spotted Ethan and hurried over. "Ethan, what happened to Elise?" Nancy demanded, her voice trembling. "How could there be an accident on set? What is going on?!"
Ethan struggled to maintain his composure. "A wire snapped," he explained, his voice strained. "The stunt double fell. She landed on Elise."
Nancy's eyes were red-rimmed with fear. Her whole frame trembled. "How bad is it? Is Elise going to be alright?"
"I don't know," Ethan admitted quietly. "They're in surgery right now."
The word 'surgery' made Nancy's legs buckle. Ivan caught her swiftly, holding her steady.
"She'll be alright," Ivan murmured, trying to sound reassuring. "Elise has always had luck on her side. She'll pull through."
"But what if she doesn't?" Nancy cried, tears choking her words. "I never should have allowed her to work in this industry. I would have forbidden it if I'd known it was so dangerous..."
Their exchange sent Ethan's emotions into further turmoil. Yet, as always, he forced himself to remain restrained.
Just then, the doors to the operating room swung open. A nurse rushed out.
"Family of Elizabeth York?" she called out, looking around.
"Here! We're here!" Nancy quickly moved toward the nurse.
But in that moment, Ethan found himself rooted to the spot. A sudden, cold fear gripped him, preventing him from stepping forward.
