Chapter 431: Chapter 431

Dust swirled violently, pelting Victor Sullivan's face and body.

He squinted, raising a hand to shield himself.

The anger rose in his chest, but he swallowed it down.

Audrey Sullivan's hands trembled around the shovel's wooden handle.

Memories of that rainy night thirty years ago flooded back—the night her child was taken from her arms.

Victor turned his back, allowing the clumps of dirt to strike his shoulders.

"Not running away this time?" Audrey's laugh was bitter.

"Do whatever makes you happy." His voice came out muffled.

She threw the shovel to the ground. "Stop pretending to care! If it weren't for you—"

Before she could finish, several bodyguards leaped into the pit, hauling Victor out.

His tailored suit was caked with soil, his hair gray with dust.

Detective Kevin North approached. "Are you alright, Mr. Sullivan?"

"Fine." Victor forced a smile. "My wife just... mistook me for someone else."

Dusk settled over the mountain as the wind howled through the trees.

Sophia Laurent supported Audrey as they descended the slope.

Shane Prescott led the way, his silhouette straight and unyielding as a pine.

"That Luna girl seems nice," Audrey remarked suddenly.

Sophia nodded in understanding.

Victor's voice carried from behind them. "Sophia, you really should consider having—"

"Shut up!" Audrey whirled to glare at him.

At the mountain's base sat a rustic countryside restaurant.

Victor shamelessly trailed them inside. "Let me pay."

Audrey ignored him, ushering Sophia and Shane into a private room.

As dishes arrived at their table, the door creaked open.

Victor squeezed in beside Audrey, balancing a bowl of dough drop soup. "The bodyguards took all the other seats—"

Shane's chair screeched violently against the floor as he stood.

"Son!" Audrey rushed after him.

Sophia swiftly packed the leftovers.

Victor sat alone in the empty room.

His stomach growled as he stared at the vacant table.

During the drive back, Audrey gazed blankly out the window.

Shane's childhood home was a two-story house with peeling paint.

Drying chili peppers and firewood piles dotted the yard.

"You lived here?" Audrey's voice shook.

Shane nodded. "Better than a thatched hut."

The rumble of an approaching car broke the silence.

Sophia bounded outside like an excited fawn.

Ethan Sullivan stepped from his Maybach, his black trench coat billowing in the wind.

"What are you doing here?" Sophia flung herself into his arms.

"Taking you home." He ruffled her hair.

Audrey stood in the doorway, her expression distant.

"Now that's love..." she murmured.

Shane lit a cigarette. "If you're unhappy, just divorce him."

The night wind carried away both the smoke rings and the unspoken words between them.
