Morning sunlight spilled across the street corner. After breakfast with Ethan Roscente, Jenna Roland watched as he helped set up her stall before leaving. He didn't call for his driver, opting to hail a cab to the office instead.
Her stall was draped with new clothing designs. Customers streamed in from the moment she opened, keeping her so busy she barely had time to sip water. Only by noon did she finally catch her breath.
Just as she sat down to rest, Milo Roland arrived with Ryan Watson in tow.
"Sis," Ryan said hesitantly, standing before the stall.
Jenna nodded in understanding and launched into a detailed explanation of street vending tips and pricing strategies. By the time she finished, it was nearly 11:30.
She headed to a nearby restaurant to order several dishes. When the food was ready, the staff delivered it directly to her stall.
Borrowing a folding table from Tanya Hill next door, Jenna set out the meal. "Aunt Tanya, would you like to join us?"
"No thanks, my husband's bringing lunch soon," Tanya replied with a wave.
After politely declining invitations from other nearby vendors, Jenna sat down to eat with Milo and Ryan.
"Ryan, the stall's profits aren't high, so I can only pay you $100 a day," Jenna said, placing a piece of meat in his bowl. "With two weeks until school starts, you'll earn about $1,500."
Ryan's eyes reddened. "Sis, you've already covered my medical bills and tuition. I'd work for free."
"You need income right now," Jenna insisted, adding more food to his bowl. "If you call me sis, then don't stand on ceremony."
Ryan ducked his head over his rice, blinking back tears. In all his life, only his grandparents had shown him such kindness. He silently vowed to repay Jenna someday.
After lunch, Jenna noticed Ryan's faded clothes and cracked shoes. Leaving the boys in charge of the stall, she hurried to a nearby mall.
She bought Ryan four outfits and selected two pairs of shoes plus socks in Milo's size.
As she returned with armfuls of shopping bags, she spotted a crowd gathered around her stall, angry shouts carrying through the air.
Her heart lurched. Jenna broke into a run.
Pushing through the crowd, she saw a hulking man raising his hand to strike Milo!
"Stop!" Jenna shouted.
Tanya and other vendors struggled to restrain the brute, but his massive frame overpowered them.
Jenna threw herself in front of Milo, glaring at the man. "Let him go!"
