Sophie Roscente arrived at the restaurant to find the lunch spread already laid out for Jenna Roland and the family. Grace Roscente had thoughtfully ordered her a steak set.
As Sophie cut into her steak, she asked curiously, "Mom, what's the occasion? The whole family's here."
Grace beamed. "Your sister-in-law is expecting."
Sophie's knife and fork froze mid-air. She turned to Jenna in surprise. "Really?"
Grace patted her hand. "Would I joke about something like this?"
Sophie stuck out her tongue. "It's just so sudden! I didn't see it coming."
Jenna smiled softly. "We just confirmed it at the hospital."
"Oh my god!" Sophie's eyes sparkled. "I'm going to be an aunt?"
Jenna nodded.
"This is amazing!" Sophie excitedly placed a piece of fish on Jenna's plate. "Eat more. It's good for the baby."
Grandma Blanche said warmly, "A new addition to the family is truly a blessing."
Sophie suddenly remembered something. "Weren't you two planning the wedding? Should we postpone it now? The first trimester is crucial."
Grace gasped in realization. "You're right! We should hold off on the wedding photos too. We can take them after the baby arrives."
Grandma Blanche chuckled. "We'll have a lovely family portrait then."
"Okay," Jenna agreed gently.
Though her own parents were gone, the Roscente family had given her boundless warmth. She thought her parents in heaven must be at peace now.
After the meal, the elders tactfully excused themselves to give the newlyweds some privacy.
Ethan Roscente escorted Jenna back to their apartment and, unusually, didn't rush back to the office.
On the couch, he held her hand tightly, his gaze tender. "I never imagined I'd be a father. I can't wait."
Jenna scrolled through pregnancy tips on her phone and murmured, "It's still early. Don't get too excited yet."
Ethan frowned. "Don't say such things. Our baby will be perfectly healthy."
"Fine, fine." Jenna yawned. "I'm sleepy. Want to nap with me?"
She'd been unusually tired lately, mistaking it for work exhaustion before realizing it was the pregnancy.
"I'll stay with you." Though not tired himself, Ethan couldn't bear to leave her side.
In the bedroom, Jenna's eyes watered as she yawned again the moment her head hit the pillow. She clung to Ethan's arm. "I'm going to sleep now."
"Sleep well." He kissed her forehead.
Jenna drifted off quickly. When Ethan's phone vibrated, he silenced it immediately. He'd planned to slip away once she was asleep, but she held onto him like a vise. Not wanting to wake her, he stayed put until three in the afternoon.
When Jenna finally stirred, she blinked in confusion. "Why aren't you at work?"
Ethan gave her a wry look.
How could she even ask? She'd used him as a human pillow all afternoon, leaving him no escape.
