217 Is Alexander Really That Difficult
The driver was Sebastian Hayes.
He looked surprised to see Evelyn. He raised an eyebrow. "Evelyn? What are you doing here?"
Evelyn answered without much thought. "I just finished work."
Dustin's surprise grew. "You work at Aethelgard Industries? In what position?"
He joked lightly. "With your looks, you could be a receptionist."
But how could he not know? He visited Aethelgard Industries frequently. It seemed impossible he hadn't noticed her.
Evelyn resisted the urge to roll her eyes. "I'm a designer. In the Fashion Design Department."
A designer?
Sebastian's expression shifted to one of admiration.
Landing a designer role at Aethelgard Industries required serious talent or a strong reputation.
He had assumed Evelyn was ordinary. Now she revealed this significant accomplishment.
"You're full of surprises," he chuckled.
Evelyn felt slightly uneasy with his teasing.
She replied calmly. "If there's nothing else, I should be going."
As she turned, Sebastian called out. "Wait."
Evelyn turned back, puzzled.
"Look, it's late," he said. "Taxis are hard to find. Let me give you a ride. It's not safe for a woman alone at this hour."
The offer was tempting.
Taxis were indeed scarce.
But... She hesitated, looking at him.
She didn't fully trust him yet.
Her reluctance was obvious. Sebastian gave a light laugh. "I'm Alexander's friend. What's to worry about? If you're concerned, call him right now. Check if I'm trustworthy."
His earnestness made Evelyn reconsider.
He knew Alexander. He had even helped her before with the orphanage issue.
Given his obvious wealth, he might have even assisted Alexander with that large debt to Aethelgard Industries.
After a moment's contemplation, she relaxed.
Sebastian's demeanor suggested he wasn't the type to bother someone he considered unimportant.
Her expression softened. "Thank you," she said quietly.
Evelyn opened the passenger door and got in.
Sebastian started the engine. He chuckled. "Perfect timing. I need to discuss something with Alexander tonight. After I get you home safely, let's see how he can challenge me then."
Evelyn was momentarily startled. "Challenge you? Is Alexander really that difficult? I find that hard to believe."
Sebastian clicked his tongue. "You haven't been married long. You probably haven't seen all his moods. Alexander can be unpredictable. Say the wrong thing, and things can get very awkward."
His earnest tone struck Evelyn as strange.
"That doesn't sound right," she blurted out. "You're a Hayes. You handle affairs for Aethelgard Industries. Why would you need to be so cautious around Alexander?"
Sebastian nearly choked. He coughed, surprised.
He was just making conversation. He had almost revealed too much.
