Evelyn turned.
Her eyes met Alexander's intense gaze.
"You're still unwell." His voice was firm. "Stop forcing yourself. Sit. Rest."
He didn't look away from her as he issued a sharp command to his assistant. "Contact Benjamin. I don't care what he's doing. Tell him to get here immediately. If he delays, I'll deal with it personally."
"Understood, Mr. Blackwood." The assistant nodded and swiftly left to carry out the order.
Evelyn let out a soft sigh, shaking her head. "Alexander, you're overreacting. It's just a stomachache. I'm not dying."
But the unwavering seriousness in his eyes drained her resistance. She quietly sank onto the sofa, complying with his request.
Neither of them returned to the dining table.
The sudden incident had stolen their appetites completely. A heavy atmosphere of anticipation and unease settled over them.
As they waited for Benjamin's arrival, a new thought drifted into Evelyn's mind. A possibility she had never dared to consider. She might be carrying Alexander's child. A gentle warmth bloomed in her chest.
Unconsciously, she lowered her gaze. Her hand rested lightly on her abdomen.
She had grown up parentless. Family-less.
The concept of having a child had always felt distant. Unreal. It had never truly crossed her mind.
But now... if she really was pregnant, would it be a boy? Or a girl?
A faint, involuntary smile touched her lips.
She had always yearned for a warm, complete family. Was it possible that dream was coming true so soon?
Time dragged. Just as Alexander was about to call Benjamin for the third time, the door swung open. The doctor strode in, his voice laced with urgency.
"What's happened? Is someone injured?"
Benjamin's mind immediately went to the worst-case scenario. Had something happened to Evelyn?
But that seemed unlikely. If she were in real danger, Alexander wouldn't be sitting here. He'd have carried her to the hospital himself, wheelchair forgotten.
Benjamin mentally ran through every possibility as he entered the living room. His eyes landed on Evelyn, seated on the sofa. Alexander was right beside her. Their hands were tightly clasped.
They looked tense.
But at a glance, nothing appeared critically wrong.
His frown deepened. "Why did you call me here?" He shot a questioning look at Alexander before turning to Evelyn. "You look fine. Perfectly healthy. You're not sick, are you?"
Alexander's gaze remained fixed on her. "She felt ill during dinner. Samuel suggested it could be morning sickness. I need you to confirm if she's pregnant."
"Pregnant?" Benjamin blinked in surprise. "Did you even take a pregnancy test?"
Alexander's expression darkened. "A pregnancy test?"
That reaction told Benjamin everything.
He exhaled sharply, rubbing his temples. "You two are something else. Dragging me all the way over here without doing the most basic check first. Unbelievable."
Evelyn opened her mouth, then closed it. What could she even say?
She had no experience with this. The idea hadn't occurred to her.
Flustered, she managed a weak smile. "I'll have someone go buy one right away."
"No need. I'm fairly certain I have one here." Benjamin was already rummaging through his medical bag. A moment later, he produced a pregnancy test. "Lucky it's not expired. Here."
Evelyn accepted it hesitantly, nerves coiling in her stomach. Her eyes flickered toward Alexander, uncertainty clouding her features. "I'll... I'll go now," she murmured.
