Victor Roland's slender fingers flicked through the keychain. He detached a single brass key and handed it to her.
Jenna Roland stared at the solitary key, surprise flickering in her eyes.
She had expected the entire set.
"Thanks." Her expression remained neutral as she accepted the cold metal.
"I'll go grocery shopping first."
Victor gave a curt nod, his attention already returning to the documents in his hands.
Descending the hill, Jenna tightened her grip around the key.
Getting the full set wouldn't be that easy.
She could wait a day or two. But weeks? No patience for that.
The mountain breeze lifted her hair. Suddenly, her eyes brightened.
A brilliant idea flashed through her mind.
The market buzzed with noise.
Jenna returned to the Roland residence with a heavy basket of groceries, her steps light.
Pushing open the door, she found only Jason Roland in the living room.
The teenager was curled on the couch gaming, not even glancing up.
"Dinner's ready." Jenna set down the basket. "I'm leaving now."
Jason grunted, his fingers smashing the game controller buttons.
Outside, Jenna stopped at a street vendor for a bowl of beef noodles.
The neon lights of Studio 54 glowed vividly in the night.
"Jenna!" Chloe Blanchet rushed over, grabbing her arm. "Something terrible happened!"
Jenna frowned. "What?"
"Jake Varley attacked Stella Laurent with his gang!" Chloe whispered urgently. "The video's gone viral. You haven't seen it?"
Jenna's pupils constricted.
"When?"
"This afternoon!" Chloe pulled out her phone. "Here, watch."
The footage showed Jake and several thug-like men vandalizing Stella's shop.
Jenna's heart plummeted.
"I'm calling Stella."
The first call went unanswered.
The second rang endlessly before a stranger picked up.
"Hello?" A tired female voice.
"This is Jenna Roland, Stella's friend. Is she there?"
"I'm her sister, Sylvia." Exhaustion laced the reply. "She just fell asleep."
Medical equipment beeped in the background.
"How badly is she hurt?"
"That bastard!" Sylvia's voice suddenly sharpened. "When I get my hands on him—"
A nurse's warning cut her off.
Jenna quickly got the hospital address and hung up.
Chloe leaned in. "Well?"
"At the hospital." Jenna's face paled. "It was definitely Jake."
